About

My name is Alan Irwin and I’m a sculptor primarily working in wood. Most of my work uses a lathe to either create the entire piece or to create the initial forms used in the sculpture.

I started woodturning in 2000, following a traditional path of creating bowls, vases, plates, and boxes. I’ve done segmented turning, turned green wood, closed forms, open forms, and natural edged variations. More recently, I’ve been exploring kinetic pieces: from simple tops and dreidels to more complex mechanical and musical pieces.

Currently, I am exploring surface enhancements on turned forms: coloring with dyes, carving with power tools, and burning designs in wood. I’ve also decided to open up my process, including blogging about pieces as they are completed, and exposing my work to public scrutiny.

At this site, I’ll be posting images and descriptions of new pieces as well as older, completed work. You’ll also find organized Galleries where pieces are arranged along themes that I’m exploring. Please let me know if you find any problem or confusion when exploring my site.

Hi. I am really interested in your pieces of Vulcan Script.
I have been searching the internet for an interesting design of the Vulcan language. I don’t know if you follow Vulcan grammar or not, but as you’ve noted in your descriptions, your designs are not meant to be read.
If you organically come up with the designs, I was wondering if you would create an original design of scripture for me.
I would really appreciate the help. I don’t know where to begin in designing anything in Vulcan.

    Thanks again.
